Asbestos, the main contributor to mesothelioma, has been used since the times of the ancients. The disease we know of as mesothelioma must have had some occurrence during that time but was likely never recognized since it never appeared in the records of medical history from those time periods. The history of mesothelioma within medical knowledge didn't get its start until the mid to late 1800s. While it wasn't called by that name, the symptoms were observed and noted. From that point on, our understanding of mesothelioma slowly began to grow.

Initially, mesothelioma was thought to have started in the lymphatic system and then spread into the pleura and peritoneum because the first indicator of the cancer was observed in the lymph nodes. In the early 1890s, this idea began to gradually be replaced by the theory that the pleura or peritoneum was the starting point of the cancer. However, due to the rarity of the cancer, evidence to validate the theory was difficult to find and there weren't many leaps of discovery involving the cancer until the 1920s. It was then that scientists discovered that the cancer formed from the mesothelium and mesothelioma finally got its name.

The link between asbestos and mesothelioma was suspected early on. Asbestos usage increased during the Industrial Revolution because it was needed to insulate easily heated machines and the first recorded cases of mesothelioma appeared a few decades later, falling within the time span of what we now know is the normal latency period for mesothelioma. Although the mechanisms behind the impact that asbestos has on the risks on developing the cancer were unknown and the link was mostly theoretical at the time, it was clear that those who worked around the material seemed be more likely to end up with mesothelioma.

The 1940s brought the first U.S. government investigations into the dangers of the asbestos. Although there were no restrictions made on asbestos as a result of the investigations, doctors began and researchers, such as H.W. Wedler, began making solid links between respiratory disease and asbestos exposure. However, the most progress made on determining the asbestos-related causes of mesotheliomas came during the 1950s and 1960s. A team of researchers in South Africa conducted a study involving an asbestos mine and found that 33 cases of mesothelioma were somehow connected to exposure, both direct and secondhand, to asbestos. In the U.S., a New Jersey physician by the name of Irving J. Selikoff probed into the higher rates of mesothelioma within the insulation industry. His work solidified the link between asbestos and mesothelioma.
The first bans and regulations on the use of asbestos began in the 1970s. The military stopped using asbestos before 1975 and the material ceased to be used in the majority of home building within the same year. The 1980s and 1990s brought on tighter restrictions and eventually the asbestos mines within the U.S. were closed down. Despite this, the rate of mesothelioma is still on the rise due to the latency period and since we have yet to find the cure for this cancer, the history of mesothelioma is still being written.
