With only a mere 100 reported cases, testicular mesothelioma is very rare form of a rare type of cancer. This form of mesothelioma was first documented in 1957 so it is the newest type of mesothelioma discovered. Between it's relatively new status as a possible diagnosis and so few patients affected by it, there hasn't been much research done into testicular mesothelioma because there are not many chances to observe it or its progression.

This type of mesothelioma forms in the tunica vaginalis, which is the lining around the testes. Technically, this lining is a part of the peritoneum. During part of fetal development where the sex of the fetus becomes distinguished, that section of the peritoneum is pulled down into the scrotum as the testes descend down from the abdomen. Since it is made from the same type of tissue as the peritoneum, testicular mesothelioma is similar to peritoneal mesothelioma.

Testicular mesothelioma can have its origins on another location, such as the peritoneum, but it can also occur on its own. Unlike the more common forms of mesothelioma, asbestos exposure likely isn't the primary contributing factor to the formation of the cancer because there's an incredibly small chance of asbestos fibers getting inside of the scrotum to lodge into the tunica vaginalis. However, some of the cases of testicular mesothelioma did occur in patients that had been exposed to asbestos and the asbestos fibers may be able to travel through the body after ingestion and end up in the scrotum. The causes may also involve Simian Virus 40, physical damage to the testicles, a genetic predisposition, or a combination including any of those factors.

The primary symptom of testicular mesothelioma is a lump on the testicles. The lump is often painless but there have been cases where pain and tenderness around the lump was noted. As with the other types of mesothelioma, fluid build-up is also a prevalent symptom. This cancer usually presents between the ages of 55 and 75 with only 10% of testicular mesothelioma diagnoses occurring with those under 25 years of age. The latency period of this cancer is not known with certainty but it is estimated to be similar to the latency period of other mesotheliomas at 25 to 50 years.
The standard treatment for testicular mesothelioma is an orchiectomy, which is the removal of the affected testicle. A radial version of the surgery can be preformed with the spermatic cord also being removed on the side of the testicles where the mesothelioma has formed. Chemotherapy and radiation are also used in most cases because when combined with surgery, they result in the longest spans of survival. Although there aren't many cases to compare in order to get a full view of a definitive diagnosis, testicular mesothelioma appears to have a decent prognosis compared to the other forms of mesothelioma. Life expectancy ranges from 2 to 64 months with an average survival period of 23 months.
